Chelsea player ratings vs Djurgarden as Fernandez, Jackson and Sancho shine but two struggle

Send Push

Chelsea showed just why it would be a shock, travesty, and embarrassment if they were to fail to win the Conference League after sweeping aside Djurgarden in the semi-final first leg on Thursday. Going away to Sweden, Enzo Maresca's side made light work of their opposition.

Unlike in previous European games of late, Chelsea started quickly and with purpose at the 3Arena.

Bolstered by four changes by Maresca, Chelsea extended their advantage to 4-0 after a quickfire double from Nicolas Jackson. Djurgarden did get one back through Alemayehu Mulugeta's header. The hosts might have had another as well but for some wayward finishing late on.

Here, football.london individually analyses all of the Chelsea players.

Filip Jorgensen - Produced a solid save when finally called into action right before half-time and then made an even better one after the break. He parried away a deflected shot well first and moved his feet quickly to readjust. Tipped a header over as Chelsea started slowly after half-time. Couldn't do much about the goal. 6

Josh Acheampong - Not as expansive as we saw him away at Legia but did his job well enough. Had little trouble dealing with the few Djurgarden attacks which went his way, but did succumb as Chelsea lost their way in the last 30 minutes. 6

Tosin Adarabioyo - Played a big part in Sancho's goal, ripping a pass through the lines to find Fernandez. Responded well to a loose early ball as he kept firing in ambitious passes up the field, missing out the Djurgarden midfield and block.

Also did well to dominate in the air, keeping Chelsea high up the field for long stretches. Vocal as always when Djurgarden started to pile forward. 8

Benoit Badiashile - The less ambitious of the two centre-backs. Stopped a swift Djurgarden counter-attack before half-time but was caught out of position a few moments later. Couldn't back peddle to stop the goal which came from behind him. 6

Marc Cucurella - Cut out an early through ball well and progressed the ball onto his teammates in more dangerous areas. Covered when Chelsea lost the ball and played his role without many frills. 7

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall - Nothing flashy but found himself in good positions to receive the ball with several outlets. Was another to slide through Sancho throughout and always offered a helping hand going the other way. Added tempo to Madueke's goal with a well-disguised reverse pass for Fernandez in the buildup. 7

Reece James - Not always comfortable as has been the case of late when in midfield permanently. Used his body to shield play but also got outstrengthened at times. Still not as effective as when he is in wider areas but provided a moment of deft quality to find Madueke from an attacking spot, lifting the ball between and through two DIF players with perfect weight. 6

Enzo Fernandez - Easily Chelsea's best player on the night and got a well-earned rest in the second half. With his two assists here, he now has more this season than in his previous three combined (Conference League quality gap caveat not withstanding).

Picked out Sancho well for the opening goal and slipped one to Madueke for the second. His touch from Adarabioyo's pass in the creation of the first is just as good as either as it was rapped into him at shin height. Tried the same again later in the half and set up another scoring opportunity.

Always looking for the forward pass and worked well with Madueke on the right, finding some good spaces. Chelsea's chief attacking orchestrator for much of the game. 9

Noni Madueke - Looked dangerous back on his normal side and took his goal well. Often looking to come inside and linked with Fernandez to overload. Could have scored earlier after taking down James' delightful dinked pass but was denied by a good save. Has started to find his form again after injury. 8

Tyrique George - Always a threat running in behind the DIF defence despite being out of position as a striker again. Could have had an assist when his low ball evaded everyone in the first half. Mixed up his runs to come short at times, also spinning the defence to keep them guessing. Less involved when moved to the right after Jackson came on. 7

Jadon Sancho - Found space nicely before staying calm in front of goal. The finish wasn't the best but the touch from Fernandez's pass was. Created a lovely relationship with George and Dewsbury-Hall for several crossing chances. Very lively but lost Alemayehu Mulugeta at the back post for Djurgarden's goal. 8

Substitutes

Cole Palmer (On for James, 45') - Maresca continues to try to play Palmer into form in Europe and saw it work, just about. Palmer will claim the assist for Jackson's goal but his through ball should have been collected by the goalkeeper or cleared. Every little helps.

Far from the Palmer of old as he gave up a clear shooting opportunity on his right foot and lost the ball when through one-on-one. He could really do with a goal. 5

Nicolas Jackson (On for Madueke , 45') - Another one in need of some confidence despite scoring on Saturday and managed to make the risk prove worth it with two from the bench. He won't get one any easier than the first as he chased down a ball and ended up walking it into the net. It's handed to him on a plate but that wouldn't have happened if he hadn't tried to close it down.

He then showed much more skill to fire in shortly after, rolling his foot over the ball before sending a brilliant shot into the top corner. A second from outside the box in a week having previously not managed it once.

Also had a good run to the byline, stretching his legs with (artificial) grass ahead of him but couldn't find George. 8

Moises Caicedo (On for Fernandez, 45') - Probably could have done with the whole night off but Chelsea lack depth in midfield so swapped their £100million midfielders. Set up Jackson's second with typical tenacity, winning the ball on the edge of the Djurgarden box. 7

Trevoh Chalobah (On for Cucurella, 45') - Couldn't get up to the speed of the game as Djurgarden responded well after half-time. Slipped over when defending out wide and allowed a dangerous box entry. Did manage to shut out two attacks on the edge of the Chelsea box as DIF built patiently towards the end. 5

Reggie Walsh (On for George, 87') - Made his senior debut aged 16. Had a fierce shot on target with his first touch. N/A
