Independence Day 2025: India has so far been dependent on other countries for semiconductors. Every year, billions of rupees are spent on the import of semiconductors, but now the situation is going to change. On the occasion of Independence Day on Friday, 15 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort that the country's first 'Made in India' semiconductor chip will come in the market by the end of the year.
During this, PM Modi talked about the government's efforts to make India self-reliant in the field of technology amid US tariffs. He also emphasized the need for the country to become self-reliant in the field of energy and critical minerals to support many strategic industries of the country.
These countries are ahead in making semiconductor chips
At present, semiconductor chips are made on a large scale in countries like China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and America. China and Taiwan alone together produce about 75 percent of the world. Recently, after the Union Cabinet approved four new semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), PM Modi for the first time talked about the arrival of semiconductor chips made in India in the market by the end of the year. This reflects India's efforts to strengthen the chip-making ecosystem.
Why is semiconductor chip so important?
India is moving rapidly towards making semiconductor chips. Currently, the demand for semiconductors in India is around $ 24 billion, which is expected to reach $ 100 billion by 2025. By 2030, this figure will reach $ 110 billion. After petrol and gold, electronic gadgets are the most imported in India. In these too, the share of semiconductors is about 27 percent.
Semiconductor is a type of silicon chip. It is used in mobile, laptop, smartwatch, electric car and even LED bulb. In today's time, these chips are also used in fighter jets, missiles, drones, submarines, helicopters, warships. This electronic component made of silicon helps in storing, processing, operating and signal amplification of the memory of any electronic product.
