Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) produced a dogged display with bat and ball to register their first win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the ongoing edition of the (IPL) on Thursday, April 24. Rajat Patidar and Co. got the better of Rajasthan Royals (RR), much to the joy of the home fans.
RCB lost the toss yet again at home and was asked to bat first. The surface had some extra bounce, while some balls were stopping on the batters. Phil Salt got a start but perished for a 23-ball 26 after putting on a 61-run stand with . The former India captain scored a graceful half-century, and so did Devdutt Padikkal. The duo added a crucial 95-run stand off 51 balls to set RCB up for a grand finish in the slog overs.
Jofra Archer broke the partnership in the 16th over as he sent Kohli packing for a score of 70 off 42 balls. Sandeep Sharma bowled the following over and accounted for Padikkal and Patidar's wickets. The former scored a fluent 50 off 27 balls. Tim David (23) and Jitesh Sharma (20*) forged a 42-run stand off 19 deliveries at the back end of the innings to take RCB to a formidable total of 205/5 in their 20 overs.
In reply, Rajasthan got off to a blistering start with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi looking to hit boundaries off almost every delivery. The latter was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar for a 12-ball 16 after the two left-handed batters had added 52 runs inside the first five overs.
Yashasvi smashed the RCB bowlers to all corners of the ground en route to a 19-ball 49. ended the southpaw's stay at the crease in the final over of the powerplay. However, the inaugural champions had already scored 72 runs by then.
Riyan Parag and Nitish Rana joined forces and didn't let the momentum slide for RR. The stand-in Rajasthan captain was dismissed by the in-form Krunal Pandya in the 14th over, and this was the beginning of a resurgence for the home side.
Spinners Krunal and Suyash Sharma applied the squeeze with some accurate bowling, while the fielding was also impressive. After conceding 110 runs in the first nine overs, RCB gave away just 38 in the next six. They also picked up two wickets in this phase.
Rajasthan needed 58 runs to win from the last five overs with six wickets intact. A well-set Dhruv Jurel was accompanied by experienced finisher Shimron Hetmyer. The West Indies batter perished cheaply, but Jurel went from strength to strength. The visitors needed 40 runs from the last three overs. Jurel and Shubham Dubey combined to take 22 runs from the 18th over, which Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled.
Shoulders were starting to drop in the RCB camp with only 18 runs needed off the last two overs. However, Josh Hazlewood had some magic in store for the Bengaluru-based franchise. He dismissed Jurel and Archer off consecutive deliveries, giving away just one run in the penultimate over.
Rajathan needed 17 runs off the final over with Dubey and Hasaranga at the crease. Yash Dayal was given the ball for the final over. The Royals could only manage five runs while losing two wickets to finish on 194/9. In their last 11 overs, RR scored 84 runs for the loss of seven wickets.
