Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The indefinite hunger strike by Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) continued on Sunday, as dozens of women from across Madhya Pradesh gathered in front of the Health and Medical Department headquarters, demanding reinstatement of their cancelled regular appointment.
The ANMs alleged that despite clearing recruitment exams and being issued appointment letter, their postings were abruptly revoked, in defiance of court orders.
According to protestors, the issue dates back to 2022–23, when recruitment for contractual ANMs was conducted. At the time, the eligibility included both 18-month and 24-month diploma holders.

The affected ANMs challenged this rule in court. The High Court ruled that those holding 18-month diplomas should be allowed to appear in the exam.
Following the order, around 400 ANMs appeared, passed and were selected. About 124 women received regular appointment and served in various postings for six months, until their appointments were suddenly cancelled by the department.
The women again approached court, which ruled in their favour a second time, ordering reappointment. However, the protestors claim the department is yet to implement the court’s directive.
“After serving for six months in regular posts, we were abruptly removed. Twice the court has ruled in our favour, yet we are forced to sit on hunger strike for justice,” said one protesting ANM. The women have resolved to continue their protest until the health department re-appoints them as per the court’s orders.
