Tensions between India and Pakistan, briefly appeared to de-escalate after both sides announced a ceasefire agreement on Saturday, May 10. The ceasefire, which was meant to halt all military activity across land, air, and sea, was confirmed by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in a press briefing at 5:00 PM IST.
Misri had said that the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both nations had agreed to cease all hostilities from that time, after intense negotiations. However, barely hours after the announcement, Pakistan violated the ceasefire. Here are 10 key developments that unfolded following the ceasefire:
1. PM Modi Holds Meeting with Top Security Officials
Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, NSA Ajit Doval, CDS General Anil Chauhan, and the Chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force to review the situation following the announcement of ceasefire with Pakistan.
2. CM Omar Abdullah's Raises Concern Over Ceasefire Violation
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his concerns over the ceasefire on social media. He questioned the validity of the truce while explosions continued to be heard across Srinagar, posting on X, “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire?”
3. Drone Sightings and Explosions in Kashmir; Air Defence Systems Respond
Shortly after the ceasefire agreement, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a series of drone sightings followed by explosions across the Valley. These incidents, attributed to cross-border violations, raised serious concerns about the truce’s credibility. In response, air defense forces were swiftly activated. A drone was successfully neutralised over Srinagar’s Batwara neighborhood near a strategic Army installation. Similar interceptions were reported in Baramulla, Anantnag, and several other districts as security personnel worked to contain the threat.
4. Gunfire and Shelling Along the Border
Reports indicated that Pakistani forces resumed gunfire and shelling along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC), targeting both civilian and military zones. The RS Pura, Akhnoor, and Nowshera areas in Rajouri district saw mortar shelling and small arms fire, prompting further military engagement from India’s side.
5. Explosions in Jammu and Udhampur
Multiple explosions were reported across Jammu and Udhampur late on Saturday evening, following air raid sirens. The explosions were reportedly linked to drone attacks originating from Pakistan. These attacks caused power outages in several areas.
6. India Holds Press Briefing on Ceasefire Violations
The Indian government issued an official statement condemning the violations. Foreign Secretary Misri said, “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan. This is a breach of the understanding… The Armed Forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response. We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations... The Armed Forces have been given instructions to deal strongly with any repetition.”
7. Security Forces Respond to Intruder at Nagrota
In a separate incident, an alert sentry at the Nagrota Military Station responded to a suspected intruder near the station’s perimeter. A brief exchange of fire took place, with the sentry sustaining a minor injury. A search operation was initiated to locate the intruder, further complicating the ceasefire situation.
8. Amritsar Issues Emergency Guidelines
Given the heightened tensions, the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar issued emergency guidelines urging citizens to stay indoors, keep lights off, and avoid windows and balconies. Emergency contact numbers were provided to the public to help address any concerns during the uncertain situation.
9. Pakistan Denies Ceasefire Violation
Late on Saturday night, Pakistan’s Information Minister Atta Tarar denied any ceasefire violations, contrary to Indian claims. In a statement reported by Dialogue Pakistan, the Minister insisted that Pakistan had adhered to the ceasefire agreement, dismissing the accusations made by the Indian government.
