Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwoodwas involved in an on-pitch brawl during Marseille's pre-season win over Aston Villa. The Ligue 1 side defeated Unai Emery's Villans 3-1 during their warm-up meeting on Saturday, though the fixture was anything but friendly.
Greenwood put his side ahead just five minutes in before John McGinn equalised. Former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then scored twice to secure a win for the French side, while Emery's men fell to a fifth pre-season defeat.
Frustrations boiled over after Greenwood, having bounced off several feisty challenges in succession, cynically tripped Amadou Onana from behind after the Villa midfielder made a pass. Onana appeared to take exception to the challenge, and the pair began to square up to each other.

Greenwood was seen laughing in the Belgian's face and seemingly blew a raspberry at Onana. That's when his Villa team-mate Tyrone Mings intervened, with the situation escalating as the defender grabbed Greenwood's jersey and dragged him back and forth.
Players from both teams intervened and pulled the pair apart, with Greenwood's shirt being left ripped. However, despite their violent conduct, neither player was shown a red card.
Greenwood, 23, took to Instagram after the match to share snapshots from the win but made no mention of the on-pitch altercation.
One image showed him celebrating with his team-mates. He also reposted a clip of himself shrugging off Mings' challenge before tucking away the opening goal.
Greenwood parted ways with the Red Devils last summer following a suspension by the club in January 2022 amid allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. All charges were subsequently dropped, and the winger joined Getafe on loan on deadline day in the summer of 2023.
His permanent transfer to Marseille in 2024 included a substantial sell-on clausein the deal, should Marseille decide to offload him in the future.
Greenwood scored 21 Ligue 1 goals last season, and there were reports that he could be set for a move back to the Premier League. However, a transfer did not materialise, and Greenwood looks set to represent Marseille in the Champions League this season.
