Police searching for a man who was last seen getting into a taxi last weekend have found a body.

Richard Thornton, from Greater Manchester, vanished in the early hours of Saturday from the Werneth Low area. His family and friends desperately shared appeals for help on social media in a bid to bring him back home.

Sadly, Greater Manchester Police issued a tragic update and confirmed it has recovered a body, which is believed to be Mr Thornton. He was last seen more than 48 hours ago, with doorbell footage capturing him getting picked up by a taxi.

He left an address shortly before 5am on Saturday. After being picked up, his last location from his phone was near Stockport's Stepping Hill Hospital.

The force confirmed a body was located this morning, reports Manchester Evening News. Greater Manchester Police said: "We can confirm that the body of who we believe to be missing man, Richard Thornton, has sadly been found deceased this morning off Mottram Old Road, Hyde (16 September).

"Richard was reported missing to us on Saturday and enquiries had been ongoing since to locate him. Formal identification is yet to take place, however Richard’s family have been informed of this update and are being supported by specially trained officers. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Richard’s death, and a file will be passed to the coroner."
