Rapper Chris Brown is set to get a shock to the system in the UK's prison network after being . The rapper, 36, was denied bail at Magistrates' today (May 16) and his case escalated to Crown Court after he allegedly attacked music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle.
The alleged incident is reported to have taken place in a London nightclub in 2023. Brown failed to attend four separate interviews with police after the alleged incident and then left the country, meaning he was "classed as a wanted man". However, speaking on behalf of Brown, Grace Forbes argued he is "not a flight risk".
Now Brown will be remanded in custody until his next trial date, which is currently set for June 13th at 10am at Southwark Crown Court in London. His next hearing is just two days before his UK tour dates are scheduled, for June 15 and 16 at Manchester's Co-Op Live Arena.
In the meantime, the rapper will be taken to a UK prison. According to the gov.uk website, the first immediate steps upon arriving see each inmate given an interview and assessment with a professional, to ensure they're aware of their rights and understand the rules of the institution.
Brown will be given a prisoner number and his property recorded and confiscated until his release. He'll also be allocated a security category, which in general is based on how likely a prisoner is to try to escape and their risk of causing harm to other prisoners or prison staff.
Inmates get three meals a day behind bars and have access to drinking water at all times, as well as being given "the facilities to prepare a minimum of four hot drinks a day", according to the Prison Reform Trust.
Rules state that "the food provided shall be wholesome, nutritious, well prepared and served, reasonably varied and sufficient in quantity." Prisoners choose what they want to eat from a menu, with examples for breakfast including cereal with milk, then "a sandwich or portion of pasta" for lunch. Dinner could be anything from curry to pie.
It's a stark contrast to the KFC Brown was brought by his entourage while being questioned by police in Manchester.
Although every celebrity inmate's experience will differ within the prison system, former inmates have shared their experiences being locked up with A-listers in the UK. Quora user Steve Watson claimed to have been incarcerated with George Michael, who was "put straight into the D Cat part of the prison, which is basically two big portacabins that housed about 20 people in each. They didn't have locks on their doors, they could pretty much do as they pleased within that cabin."
