Your coin collection could soon make you richer!
Some rare coins command staggering sums, with collectors ready to splash out serious cash, particularly at auctions or through sales on platforms like eBay. And now one penny could potentially fetch up to £200,000 - but it's not just any piece.
A savvy collector on TikTok recently showcased an "intriguing" coin that might just be hiding in your change. The @coincollectingwizard, with a following of 294,000 fans, regularly highlights the rarest and quirkiest designs to keep an eye out for.
He's already called attention to valuable pieces of currency that could line your pockets with wealth. And just a few days ago, he revealed a 1952 penny worth £200,000, calling it the "rarest proof penny of the entire series of copper and bronze pennies".
The post exploded with engagement, amassing 500 likes and scores of comments. In his reveal, he explained: "This penny is estimated to sell for £200,000 at auction, do you have one?"
He explained: "This is a UK penny from 1952, this intriguing proof coin is the rarest proof penny of the entire series of copper and bronze pennies.
"The existence of this unique 1952 proof penny was not known publicly until its initial appearance at numismatic auction in October of 1997, some 45 years after it was struck. The British numismatic world was astonished to see this coin appear and in proof quality as this was not known to exist.
"The 1952 proof penny remains an enigma as the only unique proof striking of a pre-decimal penny of the 20th century. It is perhaps understandable that George VI in 1952 proof penny remains a unique piece as the King died very early that year, passing away on February 6. It will go up for auction and is estimated to reach £200,000 if not more."
Since sharing details online, the coin has piqued the interest of collectors, some of whom claim to possess the same rare find. Comments on the design range from praise, labelling it "nice", to queries about how to sell the valuable item.
Specialists claim the 1952 proof penny's distinction as a singular and highly sought-after treasure. Despite a lack of standard circulation pennies from that year, one proof variant exists.
This extraordinary coin flew under the radar until it surfaced at a 1997 auction, earning the moniker "numismatic unicorn".
Collectors covet this coin for its rarity and the historical context of its minting - marking the time of transition with the death of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II's ascension.
The obverse showcases the visage of King George VI surrounded by the inscription "GEORGIVS VI D: G: BR: OMN: REX FIDEI DEF", while the reverse is engraved with "ONE PENNY 1952" above a seated representation of Britannia.
