With the UK weather getting colder as we head closer to autumn, condensation will pose a major issue. The problem stems from elevated indoor humidity levels and becomes particularly troublesome between the end of September and April, though it varies with temperature.
Whilst certain window specialists maintain that replacing glass panels offers the sole long-term solution for condensation, a TikTok cleaning influencer has revealed the most effective immediate fix. Ffion Bloomfield, behind the TikTok profile @blooms_abode, suggested placing one household item near your window to eliminate surplus moisture. The straightforward trick relies on baking soda to tackle condensation issues on windows, cabinets, cupboards and even wardrobes suffering from dampness problems that can eventually lead to mould.
Ffion highlighted that when left unaddressed, excessive moisture on windows promotes mould and mildew development, creating conditions for additional structural damage in your property.
This method proves far more uncomplicated, nevertheless, requiring "no gadgets needed", according to the cleaning enthusiast.
To implement the trick, she began by opening blinds and curtains first thing each morning, then positioning the small container of bicarbonate of soda beside the window ledge.
Baking soda works by absorbing the moisture in the air. Over time, you will notice the baking soda will harden as it absorbs the moisture.
As an additional step, the cleaning specialist advised treating the window ledge with mould spray, particularly the Astonic Mould and Mildew Blaster, although numerous other sprays prove equally efficient.
She recommended carrying out this process every two weeks, or more regularly if dark patches emerge in the interim. Moreover, the bicarbonate of soda should be replaced with a fresh pot when it "eventually goes hard", typically after a month.
With over 62,900 followers keen on @blooms_abode's useful cleaning tips, the bicarbonate of soda method is a guaranteed way to combat condensation.
Some TikTok users suggested alternative ways to tackle household condensation, but the cleaning guru defended her method as the best.
One suggestion was to use washing-up liquid on a dry cloth to clean residual mould, but the TikTok cleaning expert warned: "It wrecks things. The water just sticks to other things in the house."
Others praised the condensation solution, with one person commenting: "Thank you so much for that hack, I'm delighted I never thought of using that spray on the windows before." Another commented: "Just done what you said. Needed this badly."
