There is a simple solution for getting your whites brighter when you put them into the washing machine. Dull whites can be highly frustrating for UK households. Sometimes, when we have had things like white t-shirts, hoodies or socks for a while, they somewhat lose their brightness. But this does not have to be the case. There is a simple solution that involves a household item you may well already have in your kitchen cupboard.
The trick is to add some baking soda to your washing machine when you are washing a load of whites. White clothes need to be washed separately from other clothes to make sure they do not catch colours and get stained or dulled. But if you are trying to bring them back to life, then you should simply add baking soda to the drum of your machine. Many people swear by this trick after trying it out on their white clothes.
The experts at Whirlpool suggest this as one of the solutions to making your whites whiter. "When using baking soda to whiten your clothes, there are a few approaches you can take," the experts say.
"The first option is simply adding baking soda directly into your washer before selecting a wash cycle. Don't add it to the detergent dispenser as this can create a clog.
"The second way to use baking soda to whiten clothes is to create a solution of baking soda and water to soak your white clothes in for about an hour before they are washed using a "whites" wash cycle."
Some Reddit users have tried and tested it for themselves. One person revealed that they actually use it in every wash, and they find it effective for lifting stains and getting clothes to smell better.
However, this isn't the only way you can try to get whites whiter after they have become dull. Another solution suggested by the experts at Whirlpool is to use oxygen-based bleach. You will have to leave your clothes to soak in it before washing them, though.
