Detroit Lions rookie WR Dominic Lovett talks about being like a sponge

Send Push

The Detroit Lions lost at the last moment in the 2024 NFL season . It was embarrassing for everyone, from QB Jared Goff to HC Dan Campbell . The Lions carried an impressive record throughout the season with 15 wins and only 3 losses.

However, when it mattered the most, in the divisional round of the 2024 playoffs, they lost to the Washington Commanders by a disappointing score of 45-31. To strengthen their QB Jared Goff’s stance, the Lions need a wide receiver who’s speedy and agile! That’s what Cole Bambini, Editorial Associate for the Detroit Lions of the NFL, had to say about 22-year-old Dominic Lovett .

In Bambini’s exact words, “His(Dominic Lovett) comfortability in the slot, speed, and experience as a gunner should allow him to compete for a spot as a core special-teamer. He’s not an explosive receiver, but he excels in short, quick routes for easy yardage.”

Even though he fits the equation of the Detroit Lions’ WR requirement, does Lovett feel welcome in the locker room? What are his thoughts on being the newest Lion in Detroit city? Let’s find out.

Detroit Lions rookie wide receiver Dominic Lovett says you just have to accept that you are the new guy on the block

Detroit Lions’ newest speedster, Dominic Lovett, shares his thoughts with Tim Twentyman, Detroit Lions Senior Writer and Insider, “You basically start over at every level. You go from high school to college, you have to start over. It’s really just being a sponge and soaking up everything in the room, knowing it’s okay not to know everything.

And guys have been here before you, and just find a vet to stick with. Just find someone to stick with and let them show you the ropes. It’s not going to be perfect.”

Detroit Lions 2025 NFL Draft seventh-round, 244th pick, Dominic Lovett continued, “You just have to accept that you are the new guy on the block. That’s okay. Everybody was a rookie at a point. So, you just have to come in and be a sponge.

I didn’t play special teams until I got to Georgia, and that’s where I found my value and my love(for football). I feel like special teams is another way to be on the field and another way to compete.

I feel like it’s a one-on-one battle from the man across from you. It’s just you vs. him. I told them I’m willing to do whatever to get on the field.”
