California Governor Gavin Newsom has intensified his criticism of Fox News late-night host Greg Gutfeld , issuing what he described as a “final warning” in a post on X.
In an all-caps message on Thursday, Newsom called on Fox to suspend Gutfeld, saying he “needs a fake laugh track” and “makes things up.” He also accused the host of being “easily triggered” when co-host Jessica Tarlov speaks.
The governor further claimed that Fox’s late-night program is suffering from declining ratings and warned that if the network fails to act, he would push the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to “take care of” the matter.
“Fox do the right thing or I will make the FCC take care of you. Final warning,” the post read.
The post quickly drew attention as debates over the First Amendment and free speech intensify, particularly in the wake of controversies surrounding late-night television hosts.
Greg Gutfeld, often described as the “King of Late Night,” is the host of Gutfeld! on Fox News and co-host of The Five, one of cable’s top-rated shows.
Known for his libertarian humor and sharp political satire, Gutfeld has built a reputation as a provocative figure in American media.
Newsom’s remarks came days after ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! following backlash over Kimmel’s comments about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk .
During a recent monologue, Kimmel accused the MAGA movement of politicizing the murder case involving 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. His remarks prompted widespread criticism and renewed scrutiny of late-night commentary.
Meanwhile, CBS announced that it will end The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in May 2026. The decision, attributed to financial concerns, comes despite Colbert’s strong ratings. The move has fueled speculation, particularly in light of Paramount’s legal settlement with Donald Trump and its planned merger with Skydance Media.
