Assamese Singer Gayatri Hazarika Dies at 44 After Cancer Battle

Tragic Loss of a Musical Icon

Beloved Assamese vocalist Gayatri Hazarika passed away on Friday at the age of 44 in Nemcare Hospital, Guwahati, following a long struggle with colon cancer.


Dr. Hitesh Baruah, the Managing Director of Nemcare Hospitals, confirmed her death to a local news channel, expressing profound sorrow: “Today is a very sad day for us. We have lost Gayatri Hazarika. She left us at 2:15 PM after being admitted to our hospital three days ago due to a worsening condition. She was moved to the ICU yesterday, where she took her last breath.”


Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared his condolences on X (formerly Twitter) through the official CMO Assam account.


“Her soulful voice and lasting contributions to Assamese music will always be cherished. HCM prayed for her eternal peace and extended heartfelt condolences to her grieving family.”



Atul Bora, the President of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), along with filmmaker and actress Aimee Baruah, also paid their respects.


Gayatri gained recognition through her hit song “Xora Pate Pate Phagun Naame.” Her voice, celebrated for its sweetness and emotional resonance, brought life to many tracks, including “Tumi Kun Birohi Ananya,” “Jank Nasil Bonot,” and “Xeuji Xopon.” She was highly regarded for her contributions to Assamese music, both as a playback singer and a live performer.
